FIM Superstock 1000 Cup, 9th race in Portimao

Category: Superstock

The penultimate round of the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Cup was held this last weekend on the demanding track of Portimao in Portugal.

Before it was time to tackle the track in Portimao Team alpha Racing had to get over the more than 2.500 km road trip from the headquarter in Stephanskirchen near Rosenheim to Portugal. Friday meant the first free and timed practice sessions and young Markus Reiterberger had to find his rhythm around the twisty up and down circuit. The first qualifying was finished in 13th position and the team had some work to do for next day’s riding. Saturday went better and Markus could secure a third row starting position. Not the best perspective but the team was working in the right direction.

During the night from Saturday to Sunday heaven opened its doors and poured lots of rain onto the portuguese track. The warm ups were held but right after that the race organizers stopped the schedule as there was so much water on the track that it was too dangerous to ride. At first the Superstock race seemed to be cancelled but then the organizers issued a new time table with Reiti’s heat to be held late afternoon. So with a 6-hour delay it was race time and the young Bavarian must have hoped for wet conditions as he was 4th fastest in the morning’s warm up session. But the track had dried up completely and after a mediocre start Reiti couldn’t find his rhythm and struggled throughout the race. When the chequered flag fell he was in 9th position earning him 7 valuable points for the championship. As it was the case in many of the earlier competitions the alpha Racing BMW S 1000 RR was on top of the speed rankings but not even this aspect could turn this weekend into a positive one.

In two weeks the team will head to Magny Cours in France for the last encounter of the 2012 FIM Superstock 1000 Cup and we will keep our fingers crossed for Reiti so he can make up the missing points to finish the season in the top 5.
